Open Steel Grid Bridge Flooring

There are two construction methods for producing these systems … by welding and by riveting. Welded systems
incorporate 5-3/16” special I-Beams as the primary load carrying member while riveted decks use flat bars. Generally
welded systems are lighter with greater span capacity than the riveted designs. Welded construction is offered in two
surface configuration meshes … a diagonal pattern grid and rectangular pattern grids. Riveted grids are all diagonal
patterned due to their riveted construction. Open grid decks are the lightest decks commonly available for use as bridge
decks. Open grid decks generally weigh between 15 and 35 psf, with weights in the range of 18 to 25 psf being most
common.

Grid Reinforced Concrete Bridge Decking

Partially Filled Grid Decking One of the two available special 5-3/16” grid I-beam sections has a middle rib which
permits the shop installation of a sheet metal form pan at that point to retain concrete in the top half of the steel grid
deck. This lighter weight welded rectangular mesh alternative is often flush filled when used in conjunction with an open
grid of the same 5-3/16” grid thickness or it can be overfilled to yield a final nominal slab thickness of 7” and weighing
about 20 to 30 psf less than when full depth filled. These designs incorporate more steel and less concrete than full depth
grid reinforced decks yet have span capacities near those of full depth systems. Partially filled grid systems with a 2”
monolithically poured concrete overfill commonly weigh in the 60 to 75 psf area. When finished flush with no overfill,
weights in the 45 to 55 psf range can be expected.

Full Depth Grid Decking When filled flush with concrete, the full depth grid decks are available in three grid & main
beam thicknesses, 3”(Tee), 4-1/4”(special I-Beam) and 5-3/16”(special I-Beam). With a monolithic overfill of concrete,
their nominal slab thicknesses are 5”, 6” and 7” respectively. Full depth grid decks are a limited welded rectangular mesh
construction with top & bottom transverse steel and shop installed sheet metal forms. When precast, these full depth
grid decks may not use or require shop installed sheet metal forms. These systems can continuous span up to 10’. With a
2” concrete overfill, full depth grid decks generally weigh between 70 and 100 psf.

Welded Heavy Duty Steel Bar Grating

For applications with little to no public access , but must be able to handle heavy loading conditions, such as AASHTO highway vehicles and lift trucks, welded heavy duty steel bar grating is most suited.

Applications such as airport drainage trench covers, loading docks, industrial flooring, heavy work platforms, utility trench covers and highway drain grates are just some of the areas where our heavy duty bar grating can be used.
